Eating clothes?

Ok so is it just my dog or what? He eats anything in sight. Shoes, underwear, socks, a six foot leather leash (which by the way passed just fine). I swear my dog has an iron stomach, but I am very worried. He will eat any small piece of clothing if you leave it on the floor long enough. Since I got a hamper with a lid it's better but I am still always worried that he will get something that he won't be able to pass. Any tips on how to keep him from eating clothing, oh yeah getting in the trash and eating stuff out of there too. Thanks for any tips and words of encouragement!

Well, I can tell you with the experience of owning a youngster for all of 5 weeks now, that the only way you can stop him eating stuff is by putting stuff away. Our house has never been so neat, but we had to learn the hard way.

A six foot long leash? Gosh, I would have been a nervous wreck :'(

He will outgrow it.....just have to be careful what you leave laying around. When Barnabas was a puppy he never chewed on any of my clothes but loved my wife's bras and underwear. He especially like to chew the underwires out of the bras. He never ate them just chewed the wire out and then moved on to a new one. Our new boy Milo is big on newspapers, books and pillows. Nothing like coming home and having newspaper shredded to the size of a quarter and pillow stuffing all over the living room. He's only done it a few times and we do a quick run through of the house with a puppies perspective of good thing to chew before we go anywhere. I must say though, having 2 , they do keep each other occupied. Good luck and just remember, it's only a puppy phase, you'll get through it.

Well, you can hope he will outgrow it. But there have been lots of Danes here who have eaten lots of clothing. Undies seem to be a favored item!!! It will just inspire you to have a VERY tidy home!!! andi

I have a pair of digested leopard panties in the yard right now. My dane has not started this awful habit yet but my weimaraner has been having it since he was a puppy. I have just learned to try to pick up everything. He will even try to knock down the clothes basket so I have to pick that up too.

Puppies do teach you to be good house keepers.

Besides picking thigns up, I'd also recommend crating the dog while you aren't supervising him. Puppies can get themselves into a lot of trouble in a short while. For his own safety, he needs to be confined in a safe place.

If you're busy, but in the house, you might try tethering him to you with a leash. Good training for him and it allows you to easily keep an eye on him.

Remember that a tired puppy is a good puppy. Make sure you allow plenty of time for off-leash romps. Play, play and play some more...until he gets tired.

Obedience training is good exercise, too. Twenty or so minutes a day stimulates their brain and their bodies. Plus, it has excellent results!

If you haven't done so already, enroll in a puppy kindergarten class. There you will learn the correct methods for teaching commands. Both the socialization and training gleaned from a puppy class are very valuable.

I once came home to a sherdded phone book, i still find pieces of it now and agian... and it was an egytian pharoah hound mix that i was foresting for a rescue.
