RE: Pet Food Recall (Includes Iams & Eukanuba)

This is really important and I'm fearful people may overlook this.

The first paragraph indicates is typically sold under a store brand name, however later in the artical it reveals that it also includes Iams & Eukanuba. Which many pet owners unwittingly feed their dogs under the misconception it's a "high quality" brand.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

            RE: Pet Food Recall

I get chicken frames that a butcher orders for me on Saturdays. This morning we were talking about the kibble re-call. He told me he keeps a barrel of scraps that is mostly fat in his fridge and a truck picks it up weekly along with scraps from other places. He said the truck stinks with rotten meat in it and that's what goes into the kibble made locally. I doubt if it's any different any other place.

RE: Pet Food Recall - Rat poison?

EXCLUSIVE: Rat Poison to Blame for Some Pet Food Contamination

March 23, 2007 — ABC News has learned that investigators have determined that a rodent-killing chemical is the toxin in the tainted pet food that has killed several animals.

A source close to the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food.

                      RE: Pet Food Recall

It's important to note that the recall affects mainly canned items (or items in pouches).

                      The link cited above:
                      http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

will allow you to click on the product and find out the exact size/type/UPC number of the product being recalled.

I don't think the recall will have much bearing on kibble.

                          What I can't find anywhere

I have a client whose dogs hadn't eaten the Nutro in approx. a month & when they were eating it, was approx. a 1/2 can a day ea (they're around 40 lbs) as a taster to their dry. One of his dogs has vomited recently, a few times, and he had taken them to the vet for testing. Some levels, don't ask me which one's, were high, but did not seem to concern the vet. They act healthy & of the right energy.

My question is would it have taken a month to show any symptoms and is he just being overly paranoid?

The owner may wish to discuss with the vet the results of the bloodwork and if it implied kidney damage--according to the product website, the food will cause kidney failure. According to their site, they say:

"If your pet is exhibiting any signs of kidney failure please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Symptoms include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, disorientation and changes in water consumption and urination. If you suspect that you have fed the recalled pet food to your cat or dog, save any remaining pet food and the can or pouch. Open cans or pouches may be double-bagged in sealable plastic and kept in the freezer."

                            Hope this helps,

He doesn't have any of it, had stopped feeding it a month or so ago so he's not sure if he did/had fed it to them.

I guess time will tell, I was hoping someone knew if enough time passed that it was unlikely to be causing the stomach upset.
