  • Opinions on Food Rotations

So when I was younger I was always told that it's best to find a food that works for your dog, and stick with it for good. Changing food puts stress on a dog's system and should be done as little as possible. (granted my parents aren't dog experts, they've only ever had 3 dogs, have always bought from BYBs, and they feed their dog science diet right now and are convinced that it's a high quality food, but I was also told the same thing by a few vets when I was younger).

What are your opinions on this? Stick with one that works, or rotate foods every so often? If you chose to rotate, how often? monthly? every few months? every bag of food?

Just curious to hear your opinions on the matter.

"If we could live like wolves, we would never hate our brothers and sisters just for being different colors. We would live together in harmony, knowing that the well-being of others would be the basis of our own well-being. We would have a sensible order. We would look after Mother Nature because we would understand that we need Her to survive, and we would kill for one reason only - for food. What a perfect place the world would be, if we could only live like wolves." -Anonymous

For those of my animals that are kibble fed I don't so much change brands as I do varieties.... I do this about once a month or so... When I notice them starting to turn their noses up at the food, it's time to change varieties.....

I rotate TOTW flavors every 2 or 3 bags. They don't seem to like the duck as much so it's mainly just the other 2 flavors that I rotate.

I rotate Orijen flavours every few bags - sometimes I feed RRed or 6Fish only, and sometimes I mix them. I can't rotate with the Adult formula because it contains chicken.

I also rotate the TOTW flavors. They love the Wetlands but I throw in a bad of HP every once in awhile.

We rotate different brands but usually same protein source (chicken) to make for not a drastic change. Every bag lately has been something different, but the dogs don't seem to mind. We've been going between Premium Edge and Chicken Soup mostly.

Actually, the main reason behind a rotation diet is to change the protein source. That's one of the reasons why the higher end brands have foods with different protein sources...so you can rotate but still stay within the same brand of food.

I rotate between High Prairie and Wetlands on occasion to change the protein sources, but probably only every 4 bags of High Prairie, then 1 bag of Wetlands and back. Faust prefers the High Prairie.

We have a funny girl who can't have fish based foods and another girl who doesn't do well on high grain foods, lol, it's a balancing act!

Instead of rotating, could you just mix different protein source of a brand, such as mixing the TOTW varieties, in one batch? Or is it not good to do?

Nothing wrong with that at all. I know Katie mixes the Orijen Regional Red and 6Fish on occasion and I mix the Wetlands into the High Prairie before I switch completely to one of the other.

With that said both Orijen (6 unique) and ToTW (5 unique) protein sources. So it is less about giving them more variety in their protein sources, but, at least for me, just giving Faust something different to keep him interested.

I also have rotated foods (BilJac & Nutrisource) with my dogs periodically. They enjoy the change.
