    Packaging Changes to Canidae ALS

My last purchase of Canidae ALS dry food last week was a surprise -- it went from a 40 lbs. bag to a 35 lbs. bag. Additionally the 35 lbs. bag no longer has the easy pour, re-sealable flap that the 40 lbs. bag had.

AND the price went up from $34.99 for 40 lbs. to $36.99 for 35 lbs.

I know everything is on the rise, but this seems excessive.

The sales person at the pet store told me that they were surprised by the changes and had not been informed by Canidae of any changes before they received the latest shipment . . . also they passed on the price increase without increasing their margin.

I am in the Northeast . . . anyone else experience the same changes?

I sent an email to Canidae informing them of my surprise and displeasure at the changes, but have not heard back from them!

    Thanks

I went through this in July. A 35# bags was $43. a 44# bag was $54. My dane stools were not that firm on Canidae, and with the price change I decide to look for a new food. My dane is 13 mo. old, when I started feeding Canidae at 8 wks it was $37. for a 40# bag. I also have a boston terrier, we went through 2 - 40# bags a month. My dane is a large male, 9not over weight you can see his ribs) and was eating close to 12 cups of food a day. This meant lot of backyard clean up.
My dog food dealer was not happy with the changes they made to the candiae formula. After failing with two foods, I found one I love. Fromm Adult Gold. Both of my dogs love it, the boston will hoover the spills on the floor, something he has never done. The great dane loves the food has mantained his weight, but eats considerable less. His stools are firm and better formed, and the clean up much less and easier.

I switched my Dane and Shih Tzu to Candidae from Canine Caviar Lamb and Pearl Millet and I am pleasantly surprised. After my Dane had a bout of HGE, I wanted to switch her food. She always had "cow pattie" poop no matter what I fed her unless I added rice to it. I have heard alot of good things about Candidae and so far so good.

Finally (I know it's gross) she has formed poop!

My dane loves this new formula. But I was a little surprized at the color of poop that came out, allmost yellow instead of the common brown color. It was a little weird at first but I think I can adjust. (3 knocks on wood)

Who here didn't think Canidae was a very good food with the old formula? Everywhere I went people raved over it. Why change it? I understand a price increase, but come on don't mess with a good formula. Another thing to add..not that I take a lot of stock in it, but the food grades I have seen for the new formula are much lower than the old formula. The old formula graded something like a 112, and the new got like 96. Again, I am happy for those that like the new formula, but seems like backwards progress to me.
I have ferrets which, as anyone with ferrets knows, are extremely picky eaters. Well, I feed them a certain store brand of cat food because they will not touch ANY ferret food of any kind. They've changed the formula!! Luckily I still have some of the old stuff left and am in the process of changing them over, but I am NOT happy and neither are my fur babies!

The changes to Canidae might be for the better, but we won't be around to find out. Our Dane doesn't like the new formula at all, she won't touch the stuff.

I can't see the grading as being lower either...the changes really were for the most part very good ones..there are now 3 meat sources as the first 3 ingredients instead of 2...the white rice content was lowered (yes some other things were added in the place of so much white rice).

The only real big change is lamb is now the 3rd ingredient and there is more of it then there was in the old formula.

ETA I e-mailed the company back when they first changed the formula and they got back to me with in 24 hours.

I have purchased my second 35 lbs. of ALS for $36.99 . . . at least the price hasn't gone up further. I do miss the re-sealable easy pour flap.

My retailer is very hesitant to offer the 44 lb. bag, because of the cost.

I just wanted to note, I emailed Canidae several times over the past month, and have not received a response. I was cordial in my emails to them.

I am not sure about the formula change -- I see dog food analysis has listed the new formula, but has not reviewed it!

The food grades should not be any lower. The main ingredients stayed the same. The only major change was the fish no longer being identified, it is now ocean fish meal or something like that. They also added some supplements like cranberry, antioxidants, etc.

I agree I wish when companoes find something good they would stay with it. Coke tried this in the 80's. So many people complained that the new coke died and the original formula was brought back.

I would flood Canidae with emails, the worse that can happen is they say too bad!

I don't use canidae, but would agree that all the prices are goin up. I pay $55 for a 28 lb. bag of EVO, and from what I have seen that is really on the low end. But I can use 2 cups a day less on it than my last food and that is just between the danes, due to the caloric value. And considering for dogs that weigh pretty close to my own weight, they eat a lot cheaper than I do!!!!! Plus less trips to the vet because they are just overall healthier. And lets face it I'm sure Iams and Eukanuba and Pedigree are raising their prices for their bagged crap too. Don't ya just love the "economic slowdown" we are experiencing?!?!?!?

I am sorry to hear that. My girl has not had the slightest change. I am VERY happy with the new formula. They supplemented it with additional things like cranberry so I can cut back on a few things that I gave to her.

She absolutely inhales the new formula.

My two Danes are doing poorly and have loose stools. I am VERY disappointed to say the least! In fact one of my dogs can't eat any of the Diamond made foods...Diamond, Kirkland, Chicken Soup. I just bought my first bag of Blue Buffalo and used a $10 off coupon to bring it to $32.99 for a 30# bag. I am hoping to get decent results, but am really not happy with Canidae!

    Canidae/Diamond

What has everyone heard about Canidae teaming up with Diamond. My friend is a dealer and has heard about Canidae having Diamond produce some of their foods. We did a few searches and found other boards talking about the collaboration as well.

I found this in a search, but I don't know where the email came from.

    An email from Canidae:

"Due to overwhelming customer support and increased demand on our
products, we have been faced with unique production capacity
challenges. Our growing customer support and demand has pushed for
increased capacity, therefore we have outsourced additional
    production
from Diamond Pet Foods. Our customers demand and deserve no less than
the highest quality safe ingredients, as well as state of the art
consistent manufacturing. Outsourcing additional production from
Diamond comes not without first carefully instating and accepting
    only
the strictest testing protocols, as well as mandating stringent
operating procedures to ensure the highest quality products possible
at every level of production. We are very happy with this
    relationship
and the high quality formulations we are able to bring to you.

    Expect Excellence!
    Sincerely,
    Team Canidae"

    Canidae Formulation Change

Just under a month ago, i went to the one store in town carrying Canidae. I had Odysseus with me. The woman who normally helps us was loving him up and told me about the formulation change. I had not previously known about it, so she gave me a BUNCH of sample pouches of the old formula to help transition ody over.

Well, we got the the counter and i almost choked when they told me the price. I must have made some kind of face, because she told me about the additional weight (they are carrying the 44lb bag.)

I am paying around $50/bag. but, he is worth it. our lab is eating it as well and has never looked so good.

all these years feeding her IAM's. NEVER AGAIN!
