  • Packaging Changes to Canidae ALS

My last purchase of Canidae ALS dry food last week was a surprise -- it went from a 40 lbs. bag to a 35 lbs. bag. Additionally the 35 lbs. bag no longer has the easy pour, re-sealable flap that the 40 lbs. bag had.

AND the price went up from $34.99 for 40 lbs. to $36.99 for 35 lbs.

I know everything is on the rise, but this seems excessive.

The sales person at the pet store told me that they were surprised by the changes and had not been informed by Canidae of any changes before they received the latest shipment . . . also they passed on the price increase without increasing their margin.

I am in the Northeast . . . anyone else experience the same changes?

I sent an email to Canidae informing them of my surprise and displeasure at the changes, but have not heard back from them!

    Thanks

Oh No! I also live in the northeast so I guess I will be on the look out for this change next week when I have to buy another bag again. Thanks for the heads up!

Yes Canidae has changed all of their forumlas, also. Most of the changes are for the better. I have not purchased a new bag, as I am still on my old 40# bag. Not having the easy pour spout, will bother me. I loved how convenient it was.

I just got my own surprise 35# bag. I was about to make a thread but searched and found yours.

When I ordered last night I noticed the price went up again a couple bucks, fine whatever. But I come home today and immediately notice something's different...the bag is smaller. I didn't realize when I ordered that the weight had changed, since I just go to my favorite products and then check out.

I don't blame them for raising the price, but the smaller packaging gimmick is scummy. I'm sure most of you have noticed it at the grocery store, too.

So I may be in the market for a comparable kibble that's not so pricey and doesn't resort to those tactics. Sucks because he loves the ALS, gives him a nice coat, maintains weight very well and he has nice stools. Maybe they should stop wasting money on funny car sponsorships. (this coming from a lifelong NHRA fan)

edit: I see on their site that they have a 44lb bag now, but it's not offered on the site I order from.

So it's not just the "New Brighter Packaging" but they changed the formula too, eh? I'll see how it works, but I'm not sure if it merits a 20% increase in price.

Canidae is now being sold in 5#, 15#, 35# and 44# bags.

The 40# did not go down to 35# it went up to the 44# and the 35# is a new in between size being offered now.

Actually, today I bought a 40lb bag for 41.99. It was the last 40lb bag all the others were 35lbs.

Ive seen several list having this discussion and some people are paying as much as $10 more for a 35 lb bag.I no theirs one place within 100 miles I could get it when we fed kibble and it was high here then just because the one little fancy pet place carried the high end foods and all was ridiculous.I no they only carry 2 sizes(I looked last week when I was in town) they carry the 35# and the 15# ones. They used to carry 2 anyway not sure on weights.Everything is going up because of fuel.Ive had to raise prices of everything we sell at our bait/tackle/food and misc. items store here.Last year all my deliveries started charging me fuel charges. Its costing us $1000 a week in fuel for our trucks to do deliveries on Fridays used to be $600.I feed RAW and KNOCK WOOD the increases have been minimum most are the same.Ours went up a tad but still cheap last year when all the kibble recalls happened so many switched to raw they did go up some as the demand sky rocketed I was told.I distribute for Omas Pride and Im only ording every few months now as the fuel surcharges and my delivery is now $400 an order used to be $279 or so plus they've had to raise all the prices a couple times for the same reasons we did at our business.
Ive wondered if the prices of this is because it was a quality food and one of the cheaper priced ones and now so many is using it theyve upped the $ and the rising fuel cost as well as ingridients have all went up?

I just bought a 35# bag of Canidai and paid $45.something for it. It's ridiculous but it's the only thing Brin can eat without getting sick. I'm going to start shopping on-line for it. Anyone have a website where I can get it cheaper?

I prefer cheaper dog food, too, but is it really that ridiculous? What do you pay for a box of cereal? You probably pay upwards of $2-3/lb, so to pay $1-1.25/lb for dog food, really isn't all that bad.

I suppose you're right. It isn't all that expensive when you go by the pound. After all we pay over $10 a pound for a good steak! Put in perspective, I agree with you. And a big bag of Iams at the grocery store is a little over $33 so 45 bucks for a big bag of good dog food isn't all that bad.

Depends on how many mouths you have to feed. If you go through a bag in a month, a 10 dollar increase probably will not break the bank. However if you go through a 40# bag in 3 days thats a different story!

I am paying 46.99 for the 44# bag in Houston.

Understood Sean, I go through a 40# bag about every 12 days and I am only feeding 1 Dane. When I was feeding two, we easily went through 80 lbs a month. I am just putting food into comparison, when you really calculate the true cost, it is not that bad compared to other things we use every day!

I paid $38 for a 35# bag of Canidae ALS today. They should be having the 44# soon. I'm anxious for them to start carrying them where I get my Canidae.

I also was VERY surprised when I went to purchase dog food for my Dane and Boxer/Wein/Shepherd mix this past week. I purchased the 35lb for $43 and almost fell over. I did not remember paying that much for the larger bag! Starting to wonder if there is another dog food that is cheaper but as good as Canidae any suggestions?

I do not have any, as all dog food is going up at about the same percentage of increase. I will continue to feed Canidae until the disparity is too large to make sense or until it no longer agrees to my individual dogs. IMO, it is still one of the best Dane choices on the market.
