  • Special and unique colors

Just because this week I've gotten 3 requests for "special" colors, been sent photos of two dogs sold who have disqualifying color faults & seen as well a couple of ad offering dogs with disqualifying defects as "SPECIAL" or "UNIQUE" I guess this can never be said too often:

There are 6 AKC recognised colors of Great Dane:
fawn (golden-yellow)with black mask, brindle(black & gold tiger striped), black (solid), blue (solid steel-grey), harlequin (white base coat with black torn patches), and mantle (black & white, with a tux-n-tails pattern).

Merles, a mottled grey-black-white pattern much like a Snow Leopard, is a typical "pet" (non-breeding) color in harl litters & *IF* predominately grey/black, is normally perfectly healthy. "WHITES" herein defined (& usually so sold) as ANY animal with 15% or less pigment, are not all of the same genetic make-up, but are generally NOT healthy & do not usually make good pets.

Defective animals should NOT be SOLD; this cannot be considered an ethical practice, esp. if the defects are undisclosed? So-called "white with black" puppies are WHITES, and likely defects. Please go read the archives & look at the thread below on "COLOR" before you buy from harl litters as the defects these mostly white dogs often have are there listed.

NOTE ALL OF THESE ANIMAL (but the solid blue) must have BLACK PIGMENT. Danes are NOT supposed to be blue & white, "blueikins," or so-called "harlequins" with brown or tiger spots That is not a harl, that is a disqualifying dog who is called more properly a Porcelaine or even fawnikin/brindlikin)& has an increased chance of deafness, eye problems & skin trouble. Danes are not supposed to be predominately white, have blue, amber or "ice" or other light coloured eyes, or to have pink noses & these lite coloured animals are only 'special' in the sense *WARNING* they may take more care.

Please people, read the standard. Don't PAY MORE (!) for dogs who are lesser by the breed standard & refuse to pay at all for dogs with defects. No reputable breeder would ask you to do either, so don't support these sorts who breed, make & then try to profit by what is for the breed, such serious defects the dogs are disqualified under our standard. Being an informed consumer is the pet owner's way of contributing POSITIVELY to our breed.
Please don't fall into this trap of thinking somehow what is "rare" is good--in the "Animal Kingdom," rare is rare as it is suppressed by natural selection! Rational breed standards also try to limit dogs whose traits would cause serious problems for the breed, hence disqualifications. Please don't counteract this trend by asking for what we are trying hard to suppress while profiteers try to encourage to start a new fad. Danes deserve better than this!
thank you & yes i am empassioned about this/jpy
