  • Blue x brindle

I've been reading a lot about breeding and what colors not to breed together. A breeder in our area listed a litter that is blue dam and brindle sire. The litter is all blacks and blues. From everything I've read you would get mismarks. Is blue to brindle a normal breeding?

NO, Blue X Brindle is not a responsible breeding. They should not be bred together and responsible breeders would never breed them together.

That's what I thought but the litter is all blacks and blues so they all meet the standard. I understand the chance of mismarks. How do you know what your going to get? I wouldn't have expected these colors.

It doesn't matter what the puppy colors are.. they don't meet the standard based on their pedigree.. The colors that you get from a mixed breeding such as this depend on what is in the background of the parents...

meeting the standard involves way more than simply being the "correct" color. are you considering a puppy from this litter?

No, I just wouldn't have expected all blues and blacks from this breeding.

Genetics are complicated; often when colors or patterns are mixed inappropriately it'll lurk in the background then crop up unexpectedly. That's why it's important to stick to correct breeding practices and utilize genetic color testing if there is any doubt about what the dogs carry.
