The reporter has added a link to Jo's ABC's of buying a purebred puppy for reference to his readers.

and I think there are DOL members interviewed in the video.

Well behaved danes are not born. They are “made” by responsible and caring dane owners.

RE: warning article about buying puppies online

So you think it’s a good idea to buy a puppy over the Internet. Please restrict yourself to using the Internet for research. Here is one horror story:
    http://www.wivb.com/Global/story.asp?S=6770441

Debbie linked the follow up story.

The Internet does have its uses. Health testing is important. Know what OFA numbers mean and what tests it takes for a CHIC number. Know what a CHIC number is. Do not accept the, “I don’t have to do health testing because nothing is wrong with my line.” My question would be, “How do you know if you don’t health test in the first place?” Are these people going to wait until the dog can’t get up from severe hip dysplasia or bump into things because of cataracts? Research on this site:
    www.offa.org

Or this site and the breeder list:
    www.gdca.org

Research is the key word. Please be diligent in looking up information.

It is always a good idea to go see the puppies, meet the breeder and meet the mother of the litter…IN PERSON. Emails and phone calls can establish the basic entry level of communication but take the time to go look at the litter. The cost of shipping a puppy would pay for a round trip plane ticket and you can always bring the puppy back either in a Sherpa bag or in the hold in a crate. Of course, there is nothing wrong with taking a drive.

And if you think you want to show, please consider buying from someone who actually shows and owns champions (ones that they have finished)…and has for a long time with a list of AKC champions (note the plural). Who else would know what life is like in the trenches and be able to guide you in your show career? It’s only logical.

The important thing is take your time and don’t seek instant puppy buyer gratification. Please don’t be prey to the slick used car salesmen of the dog world…Jo

Jo, thanks for posting this story and giving me a heads up!! Did ya'll notice what state the Great Dane pup was bought from???? Good ole Oklahoma - home of Great Dane BYB's!!! Not a proud thing to be recognized for.

I was telling Jo that while I can't stand this type of BYB, I'm not much more tolerant of those puppy buyers that don't take the time to educate themselves. Folks, there are tons of information out there to help one choose that forever family companion from ethical breeders. Too many have the "I WANT IT AND I WANT IT NOW" attitude!! When I seen how much she paid for this sick puppy from Oklahoma, I thought to myself, if she had done her homework she could have had much better for much less.

Isn't that the truth! It amazes me that some shady breeders sell pups for the same or more than a responsible breeder does. So, it certainly can't be a price difference that is causing people to support such breeders.

Hopefully there are people that read the story and learned from that buyer's mistakes.

Not to mention, she is from my area, and we have many good breeders withing a couple of hours driving time from us.

Makes me angry at the breeders and the system, but I can't help but be a bit angry at the buyers too.

Oh, indeed. Sometimes you get charged a lot more. I've run across a $1200 price tag for uncropped fawns and brindles from non-shown, non-health tested parents.

Hopefully people will pay attention to the investigative reporting.

Has anyone seen the new AKC commercials?...Jo

RE: warning article about buying puppies online

Well in my opinion alot of ppl will still perchuse the dogs..as they may feel bad for the pup and i for one would prob be one of them ppl.. as i would want to try and give that pup a good life and alot of the byb's know this.. when i got my bruiser im not gonna lie.. i put faith in a friend of mine... i know nothing about the breeder of bruiser.. never met her or the dog.. i did get pics of him before we got him.. altho we didnt pay a thing for him... he was a gift from my friend... but in our area great danes are no really seen... soo the chances of me being able to find a good breeder and being able to actually meet them were very slim... but i still say either way i think we made a good choice... but alot of ppl think maybe they can turn around the pups health.. some dogs are just more stronger than others and sadly some dont make it and some do... or you end up paying out the butt to get them healthy... but i myself am glad there are some ppl willing to take in these pups as they would have a worse life if they didnt... even if ppl would be more educated there would be lots still buying from byb's as no all of them are not like this case.. not all of them have health issues... and yes i know im gonna get jumped on for this one, but what can i say its my opinion and its my thoughts.. Im entitled to that...

An important point that you may not have thought of when someone buys from a BYB or Miller....

The breeder has made $$$$ which encourages them to breed again, again and again. Until the bitch can no longer produce.. at which time they are dumped like yesterday's garbage. x( x( x(

Even tho you got your pup as a present..someone payed $$ for her. While you may give your dog a good home do you ever think about what may have become of the littermates or all the pups that come after??

RE: warning article about buying puppies online

i did not mean to imply that my breeder was a byb.. cause i in no way think that she was or is... i was just saying that i was lucky and no... the only thing that was paid for was the 6 wk vet visit and the check up for the plane ride along with the plane ride... the pup was offered to my friend has he was helping her with her divorced and instead of him keeping it... he told the breeder that he knew that we had been wanting a dane and knew how good of care we would take of him.. soo no i in no way meant to imply that my breeder was a byb or a miller... i just meant that i was lucky to hace a godo friend that new the breeder... and that not all cases of not knowing the breeder will turn out bad... but i understand what you all are saying about knowing the breeder and not buying from a byb...
